Four fire engines were mobilised and crews entered the complex to discover a small fire in a Debenhams store room on the first floor.

Equipped with breathing apparatus, crews used a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

It said no injuries have been reported.

Fishergate management described the fire-damage at Debenhams as 'minimal'.

A spokesman for the Fishergate Centre said: "A small fire was detected within the Debenhams store at 8.20am this morning.

"The fire was quickly extinguished by automatic fire systems and the fire brigade attended the store at 8.30am.

"No one was injured during the incident and damage to the store is minimal.

"The emergency response by the shopping centre was undertaken correctly and as planned.

"We thank the fire brigade for there quick response and advice offered whilst onsite."

The Fishergate Centre has been closed since lockdown began, but its car park has remained open and free of charge for keyworkers.

The centre has said its stores will remain closed to the public until further notice to protect the health of staff and shoppers.

It said it is monitoring Government advice on a daily basis and will reopen as soon as it is informed that it is safe to do so.
