'I knew they were extra special and this is my forever home' - how Clare’s life transformed with Shared Lives

When Clare first joined the council’s Shared Lives scheme she had barely left her home in years - thanks to the support of her carers Kim and Mike, she enjoys daily walks, is medication-free and is excited for her first cruise.

Clare’s life has been transformed since she joined Lancashire County Council’s Shared Lives scheme.

When she first met her carers, Kim and Mike she was anxious and had rarely left the house.

Now, she enjoys daily walks, no longer relies on medication and is looking forward to her first cruise.

Shared Lives offers adults aged 18 and over, who may have a learning or physical disability, the opportunity to live in a family home with a trained carer.

Placements can be long-term, short-term, respite, or day support with carers supported by their own Shared Lives officer from the council.

From the moment Clare was matched with Kim and Mike, she felt at home.

Clare said: “I knew they were extra special. I don't ever want to go, this is my home forever now. I love that they gave me a nice warm home and I feel safe.”

Clare has fun giving her carers affectionate nicknames - Kim is ‘Posh’ and Mike is ‘Smart’ and proudly tells everyone about the scheme.

Kim and Mike, who moved to Lancashire three years ago were looking for a new purpose when they discovered Shared Lives.

Kim said: “She has helped us to integrate, and we know so many people now.

“The best bit has been changing someone's life and giving them a safe place to live. Her health has improved, and she really appreciates our support.”

Now, the trio enjoys festive traditions together, decorating the home with decades-old decorations.

Clare said: "It's magical having Christmas here, I want it to be Christmas every day. I love Christmas, it's the best time of the year.”

County Councillor Graham Dalton said: "Clare's life has been completely transformed and it's clear to see the strong bond she has with Kim and Mike, or Posh and Smart, as she calls them.

"She didn’t just find carers, she found her forever family, and I hope she inspires people to consider becoming part of Shared Lives, to create more families and change other people's lives."
