Clouds of smoke could be seen from miles around after a fire involving seven tonnes of plastic broke out on a Chorley landfill site.

Firefighters from Leyland, Bamber Bridge, Chorley and Penwortham were called to the incident off Dawson's Lane at around 2.40pm yesterday.

It took crews three hours and 20 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze.

Station manager Ian Armistead said: "We tackled a large fire near Dawson's Lane, Chorley, which caused a significant smoke plume over nearby communities. Prompt firefighting and good on-site support ensured no wider damage was caused to the landfill infrastructure."

A police investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
