Firefighters from Leyland, Bamber Bridge, Chorley and Penwortham were called to the incident off Dawson's Lane at around 2.40pm yesterday.

It took crews three hours and 20 minutes to fully extinguish the blaze.

Station manager Ian Armistead said: "We tackled a large fire near Dawson's Lane, Chorley, which caused a significant smoke plume over nearby communities. Prompt firefighting and good on-site support ensured no wider damage was caused to the landfill infrastructure."
