Good Samaritan roofers have come to the rescue of a mother-of-two ripped off by cowboy builders.

And today a grateful Angela Crossthwaite hailed the Preston workmen who fixed her home for free as: “My heroes.”

Dave Kerrone, boss of specialist roofing firm DK Services, stepped in after reading about Angela’s plight in the Evening Post.

“I felt so sorry for her,” he said. “What this so-called builder did was unforgiveable. It was the worst roofing job I’ve ever come across. It would have only lasted a couple of months – if that.

“We had some materials left over from another job and so I thought it would be great to put them to good use and help her out out of a mess.”

Angela was “charmed” by a persistent cold caller into having two flat roofs at her semi-detached home in Longfield, Fulwood, repaired. But instead of doing a professional job, the smooth-talking jack-of-all trades did a botched repair, crudely nailing on felt strips –and even taking lead flashing.

“I didn’t have a leaky roof before he came along – but I did when he left,” said Angela. “I’m no expert, but it was obvious even to me that it was awful. It cost me £600 and another company told me it would be another £1,500 to put right.

“I couldn’t believe it when DK Services contacted me and said they would do it for nothing. They have been wonderful and they’ve restored my faith in the building trade.”

Dave said: “People who rip folks off like this get the trade a bad name. It isn’t fair what happened to Angela and it’s good to be able to show there are a lot of good people in this business. We’re not all rogues.

“It’s a full day’s work for three of us, but even though we’re busy, it was good to be able to help.”
