Emergency services, including police underwater search units and fire and rescue crews, launched a large-scale search operation after concerns were raised for a boy swimming with friends.

Tragically his body was recovered from the water later that evening.

Junior is one of 11 people, including several children, who have died in open water across the UK over the past week as temperatures soared.

The spike in tragedies has prompted emergency services and the Royal Life Saving Society to reissue urgent water safety warnings.

A spokersperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “With warm weather expected to continue across Lancashire this weekend, many people will be heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine.

“As temperatures rise, please remember a few simple steps to stay safe and help protect Lancashire:

“Open water can be colder and more unpredictable than it looks. Please avoid swimming in lakes, reservoirs and rivers.

“Dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires. Leave BBQs and campfires at home and pack a picnic instead.

They added: “Our crews are on duty 24/7, but we all have a part to play in keeping ourselves, others and Lancashire safe.

“Let's enjoy the sunshine responsibly and look after Lancashire together.”
