'He always did his best for the community' - tributes to 'smashing comrade' and former Leyland councillor
Tributes have been paid to a former Leyland councillor, who is remembered for always doing his best for others.
Malcolm Donoghue was elected to represent the Seven Stars ward for Labour in May 2016, following the death of Coun Fred Heyworth. He was relected in 2019. In 2023 he ran for the Moss Side seat, but narrowly lost to Mary Green of the Conservatives.
Believed to be originally from Southport, the self-employed electrical contractor had lived in Leyland since 1981, and was keen to see tackle anti-social behaviour and get more affordable housing in the area. He became a key part of the council’s planning and scrutiny committee, and was also a member of the Racial, Equality, Diversity Council for Preston and West Lancashire, alongside union work.

Council leader, Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, said: “I am so sad to hear of the death of former Labour Councillor, Malcolm (Mal) Donoghue. Mal served as a South Ribble Borough Councillor representing Seven Stars ward, alongside his long term friend, Councillor Jane Bell.
“As well as being a formidable campaigner for the Labour Party, Mal was a committed Trade Unionist. A member of the Communications Workers Union (CWU), Mal served on several Trade Union Committees. My commiserations to Kath, his long standing friend and companion, and to all Mal’s family and friends.RIP.”
Councillor Mick Titherington said: “Devastated to hear the sad news of Mal’s passing. A genuine, supportive comrade who always did his best in the service of his community. RIP.”
Coun Chris Lomax said: “A smashing comrade, always for the good of the community.”
