A host of events are being held nationwide and people in the county are being encouraged to join in by getting active and raising money for good causes in the UK and abroad.

People can choose to run or walk one, three or six miles at Preston’s Avenham Park, Astley Park in Chorley and Salt Ayre Sports Centre in Lancaster on Sunday, March 20.

There are also swimming challenges for people to complete alone or in teams of up to five people.

Swimmers can do either 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km from Friday, March 18 to Sunday, March 20 at Fulwood Leisure Centre, Rural Splash YMCA in Kirkham, Brinscall Swimming Pool and Salt Ayre Sports Centre in Lancaster.

Coun Bev Murray, who oversees sporting activities at Chorley Council, is encouraging people to sign up for the event at Astley Park.

She said: “Hundreds of people signed up for the Chorley Mile two years ago in aid of this national charity event and this is a great opportunity for local people to take part again.

“The event is a great way to get the community working together, keeping fit and having fun all at the same time.

“All ages can get involved and the great thing is, you can choose a distance and pace that suits you.”

People wishing to take part in the events can enter online in advance at www.sportrelief.com.

Fun run entry costs £7 for adults and £3 for children, while the swims cost £12 for adults and £9 for concessions.

The entry fee does not include a donation to the charity so people are encouraged to raise sponsor money too.
