The 50-year-old said: “Tesco chooses two charities every year and so I decided to do something to help to support these causes.

“My sister, Susan George, is diabetic and I thought this was a good opportunity to give something back to the charity which served her well.

“I go out regularly on my bike and have done a lot of training so I am fine.

“I will be stopping off at eight Tesco stores on the way down, trying to get some extra donations in a bucket.”

Simon Court, Tesco Extra in Leyland store manager, said: “John has created a real buzz and team spirit in the store. Everyday at 3pm the colleagues rang him to see where he was up to.

“I’m extremely proud of John and his efforts he has made to raise money for both charities,

“I’m equally proud of all the efforts my team at Leyland here contribute. We had a Rio de Janeiro carnival theme in the store at the weekend, where all the colleagues helped to celebrate and raise money in the store, again for the charities partnerships.”
