Fulwood Academy's school uniform policy regarding grey trousers sparks debate among parents

The post garnered mixed reviews.

A school’s uniform policy regarding grey trousers has sparked an online debate among parents.

In an email sent to parents/carers of pupils who attend Fulwood Academy, a spokesperson for the secondary school said they were disappointed that more than 130 pupils arrived on the first day back wearing trousers that did not adhere to the uniform policy.

The school’s uniform policy regarding the trousers for both male and female students stipulates that they must be grey and straight-legged.

The email was then shared by a baffled parent in a public Facebook group with nearly 40,000 members.

Titled: Uniform Expectations - Grey School Trousers, the email read: “It with great sadness that I write to you today to say how disappointed I was that more than 130 pupils arrived at Fulwood Academy this morning wearing trousers that do not meet our school uniform expectations.

“I was really hoping to send a much more positive letter about how pleased we are to welcome back all of our pupils, especially our new Year 7 pupils.

“This is despite the change to our uniform having been communicated clearly and repeatedly to pupils, parents and carers before the start of the new academic year.

“I therefore want to be absolutely clear about our expectation:

“All pupils must wear grey school trousers.

“By this, we mean proper, tailored school trousers.”

The email added that the following are not acceptable as part of the Fulwood Academy uniform:

Black school trousers.

Grey leggings.

Grey flared trousers.

Ribbed trousers.

Leisure or lounge trousers.

Casual grey trousers.

Any other trousers that are not specifically school trousers.

Examples of appropriate grey school trousers were also included in the email alongside a shop where to buy the correct one.

We communicated the change well in advance

It further read: “We recognise that moving from black to grey school trousers represents a change for families. For precisely this reason, we communicated the change well in advance.

“Parents and carers were first informed in June. It was then included in our end-of-term communications, reiterated before the summer break and included again in our back-to-school letter.

“Pupils have also received repeated reminders, and information has been shared through our social media channels.”

“We have taken a reasonable approach. Pupils wearing incorrect trousers have been spoken to and families now have the remainder of this week to rectify the issue.”

They added that from Monday, September 7, “the expectation will be enforced consistently”, and that any pupil who arrives at school wearing incorrect trousers or uniform will be placed in IMPACT until the uniform issue has been rectified.

The Post approached the school for comment and was informed the reason for the colour change was due to a rise in cost in black trousers and that grey was cheaper.

The post was met with mixed reviews, with one parent agreeing with the school saying parents were given ample amount of time to prepare for the change, while another added if they had kept the trousers black there would be no confusion of shades.
