The Met Office has issued a yellow warning - which means residents living in the region should ‘be aware’ - as gusts reach expected speeds of 60 to 70mph.

A spokesman blamed the weather on a large, vigorous area of low pressure.

He said: “This will bring a swathe of very strong west or southwesterly winds across much of the UK.

“Please be aware of the risk of disruption to transport as well as power supplies.”

Strong winds on Friday caused chaos on the motorway as a truck towing a trailer was blown through the central reservation on the M6, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and lengthy delays for motorists.

It was the third consecutive day drivers were caught in long delays.

The Met Office’s weather warning, which is in place from 6am this morning until the same time tomorrow, suggests the weather could have a medium to high impact.
