Flooded club looks brand new after £70,000 revamp

Garstang Sports Club’s changing rooms, clubhouse and pitches were flooded and destroyed at the beginning of December but thanks to its hard-working staff and volunteers, the club has a new look just four months on.

The High Street club, which incorporates the football, cricket and rugby union teams has only started to play fixtures in the last few weeks and Andy Walling, the cricket club chairman, is delighted with how things have gone.

“The club looks even better than it did before,” he said.

“The clubhouse is looking brilliant. There’s new carpets, new chairs, a new kitchen and a new bar.

“It’s been completely transformed and it actually looks much better than it did before.”

During Storm Desmond, the club’s facilities were completely flooded out with the changing rooms and clubhouse under several feet of water. And Andy admits a lot of praise must go to the local tradesmen who have come to the club’s aid.

He said: “We’ve used local people to do all of the work which has worked out well for us. It’s 98 per cent finished there’s just a few bits and pieces to finish off and then hopefully we’ll have a grand re-opening.”

The football club hasn’t played a home game since late November and Andy hopes that, weather permitting, the club can host Charnock Richard tomorrow at 7.30pm.

He said: “The pitch is looking good but there has been some bad weather so hopefully the game will be on. I have to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped us get back on our feet.”
