'I've worked very hard to get here' - local 15-year-old wins Lancashire FA Match Official of the Year
At just 15-years-old, Daniel Barker from Fleetwood has already made a huge impact in the world of grassroots football officiating.
Despite having only been refereeing for a year in the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, Daniel has been named Match Official of the Year at the 2025 Lancashire FA Red Rose Awards.
The award, officially titled the Grassroots Lancashire FA Match Official was presented at the Lancashire Football Association Sports Complex in Leyland, celebrating the achievements of referees across the county.

With hundreds of grassroots referees in contention, Daniel’s recognition is a remarkable achievement.
Daniel said: “Wow, I’m buzzing I have got an award where no one can argue the call.
“Seriously, I am absolutely gob-smacked to receive this award given the many worth contenders in this category - I am humbled and honoured to receive it - especially during my first full year of reffing too.”
Daniel also took a moment to acknowledge others, he said: “Well done to the runner up Oli Martin, who also gave it his all, and was a very tough competitor to beat.
“Thanks to everyone who got me here, in particular, my mentor Callum Hayes, who has been a constant inspiration and has encouraged me to go further than I thought I could.
“Also - a huge thank you to my mum, dad and grandparents for believing in me and pushing me on to succeed with my reffing and for driving me in all weather across Lancashire to ref various matches.
“I am absolutely buzzing. I have worked very hard to get here. I’m honoured to be given such an accolade and to represent Lancashire in this area.”

Daniel Barker’s achievement is a shining example of passion and the impact young referees can have on grassroots football across Lancashire.
Looking ahead, Daniel has ambitious plans for his refereeing career.
He said: “I would love to get to Premier Legaue level eventually. I wanted a new hobby at the weekend and thought it might make some childrens weekend. I will be progressing to Preston North End next year and I will commence my category 1, the highest youth level.”
Daniel was also awarded £100 of refereeing goods by Fleetwood Town Supportes Club (FTOSC) for his services and incredible achievements.
