Firm’s live phone debate on fracking

An energy firm is set to stage a live phone-in debate on fracking - as county planners prepare to make a decision on the planning applications for two proposed shale exploration sites in the Fylde.

Centrica Energy is to bring together a panel of guests to take part in the debate on the role of gas in the region.

The company has been a feature in the North West’s energy landscape for several decades and this year celebrates its 30th year of production from the offshore gas fields in Morecambe Bay.

Centrica also holds a 25 per cent stake in Cuadrilla’s Bowland exploration licence for which the planning applications form a part.

The debate comes a day after the North West Energy Task Force launched its Faces of Shale campaign to show support for a fracking industry on the Fylde which they say will create much-needed jobs.

Anti-fracking campaigners said that, despite industry efforts to support fracking, most residents who will have to live in the areas where drilling will take place were concerned about its effects on their environment and lives.

Hosted by independent broadcaster and former political editor of BBC North West, Jim Hancock, the free North West Energy Chat’ will run in a similar format to a talk radio show, using technology to allow listeners to hear the discussion and get involved by asking questions and taking part in live interactive polls.

The call is being held on Wednesday, June 10, at 5pm.
