Firm is always on hand with health and safety
It is common for employers to care about their staff's wellbeing, but Dr Tony Mawson makes it his business to look after the health and safety of all workers, regardless of their job.
Working as a GP, Dr Mawson met many patients who were put at risk while at work; whether it be mentally or physically.
Wanting to do more and step out of his comfort zone, he set up Organisational Healthcare in 2010, initially as a sole occupational health consultancy.
The company, based in Eastway, Preston, has since expanded to provide a complete occupational health care service to many local businesses.
Dr Mawson, 57, director and consultant occupational physician, says: “I set the company up because I recognised there was a real need to improve the health and wellbeing of employees in the workplace.
“Work is such an important part of our lives and I wanted to help people to flourish in their roles by providing support to ensure they were fit and well to conduct their roles to the highest level, which in turn benefits both themselves and the business they work for.
“We offer a fully flexible occupational health service which is centred on really getting to know the businesses we work alongside to ensure we add real value in improving the health and wellbeing of their employees.
“We do work for numerous local businesses who have come to us through a direct referral from one of our existing clients or a trusted adviser in the HR field, the sector has a strong personal recommendation culture because of the nature of the work involved.
“I deal with a full range of occupational health services including, medicals for sickness absence support, health checks for hazardous working and general health advice.
“I work with a huge variety of workplaces and jobs where I meet some great people.
“I have a particular interest in working with our engineering and construction clients and my days are typically atypical – there is great variety which is part of the appeal.”
The company is made up of seven main employees covering clinical staff, account management, marketing, business development, accounts and administration. In addition we also have a network of occupational physicians and occupational health nurse advisers allowing us to provide support on a national basis when needed.
Dr Mawson is closely supported by another occupational physician, Dr Adele Pilkington, and two occupational health nurses. On the non-clinical side of the business, the team has a business development and marketing manager, and two client account managers.
Helen Buchan, 32, marketing and business development manager, says: “I have worked for the company for seven months and am responsible for helping raise the profile of the business and attract new clients, as well as ensuring our existing clients are getting the most value from the services we provide.
“There is no ‘typical day’ in my role, one day I could be networking or meeting with a potential new client and the next I could be writing an award submission or social media content – the variety is my favourite part of the job.
“Being a small team, all with the same values, means the company is a really happy place to work with like-minded people working towards the same goals.”
Nicola Davy, 38, client account manager, says: “I have been with the company for a year and am responsible for looking after all our clients to ensure they receive the highest levels of service.
“I look after reception at the office and am the first point of call for answering the phones and responding to enquiries. I enjoy meeting many different people as part of my role and find it rewarding that we are able to make a real difference to the companies we work for in improving the health and wellbeing of their staff. It is a great team to be part of.”
