Farm fire warning

A total of eight firefighters in two engines from Preston tackled the incident at a farm on Newsham Hall Lane, after receiving the emergency call at around 6.10pm.

Watch manager Mark Woodward, of Preston Fire Station, said the farmer was burning materials at the farm.

He said: “When we got there we could see a large fire in the open.

“We spoke to the people there and they had been burning farm materials off.

“With it being a large fire in close proximity to other farm buildings we spent an hour there.”

He added: “The public and farming community need to realise they shouldn’t be burning off large fires like that, that have plastics and other materials.

“It resulted in vehicles from Preston being tied up there. We had to put the fire out so we didn’t need to go back there again this evening.

“You should dispose of these materials correctly through the correct recycling facilities.

“It could have spread to other farm buildings. It was a very visual fire on ten square metres of waste land.

“You have to get a licence from your council to do commercial burning.

“Advice was given to the farmer about his actions, not to do it again.”
