Snowy Saturday across Lancashire

Residents across Lancashire were greeted with a blanket of snow on Saturday morning.

The conditions, which extended to the often more balmy coast, had been forecast, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for Lancashire effective up to 10.30am,

Between one and three cm of snow was predicted to accumulate at low levels, with as much as five to 10cm possible in higher levels.

Residents were warned the,wintry showers, which included hail as well as the snow, may cause travel disruption on Saturday morning and the previous evening, with icy patches increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

North West Motorway Police issued a warning to drivers after a number of incidents across the North West.

They said on Twitter: "Unless you absolutely need to please stay at home. Weather and road condition are shocking today Numerous accidents across the motorway. Those essential journeys please slow down. Allow extra time. Keep your distance and drive to the conditions "

The conditions caused Blackpool Transport's 74 service operating operating to the Preston area to be diverted.

The company said on Twitter: "Due to the weather and road conditions we are diverting service 74.

"We cannot service Great Eccleton/Elswick/Inskip/Catforth or Lea. We are very sorry for the inconvenience."
