Leyland roadworks left unfinished by workmen slammed as 'dangerous' by resident

A Leyland mum-of-three has called the roadworks outside her house 'an accident waiting to happen' after they were left unattended by workmen for almost a month.

In a bid to improve the area outside the home, on Leyton Avenue, housing landlord Progress Homes had begun construction work back in August.

Since then, April Reynar has had to look out of her bedroom window on to piles of unused bricks and cones that she claims pose a danger to children in the area.

She said: "There were builders digging up the parking bays and the pathway in front of my property. They were working on a 100 yard path so it is quite a big area. There has now been nobody working here for almost four weeks and the path has been dug down around three inches.

"It has been left with gravel on and taken over parts of my driveway which are damaged. My neighbours haven't even been able to park outside their homes and have been carrying heavy shopping bags from where they now have to park.

"They have left it completely unsafe. They have left rubbish and bricks and all I can see when I look out of the window is this mess."

April claims that she had been left 'infuriated' after contacting South Ribble and Lancashire County Council who were unware of the construction work.

"They have completely packed everything up and taken everything, including the portaloo so there is no sign of them coming back. It is so infuriating because we pay our rent on time and our council tax, but have to endure this," she said.

"My son loves to play on the pathway at the front of our house or on the field with his bike, but it is too dangerous because if he rode over it it would damage his bike or injury him.

"There are no safety signs or precautions in place, just three cones around a pile of bricks. There was no notification to us or my neighbours about any of this work starting but yet our driveways have been blocked off. It is such an inconvenience for us."

Progress Housing Group told The Post that they carry out environmental works in local areas to improve the accessibility and surroundings for residents.

Tammy Bradley, Deputy Executive Director for Progress said: "We recently instructed contractors to undertake improvement works in the Leyton Avenue area. Regrettably, this has taken longer than expected, partially impacted by COVID, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to local residents as a result.

"In this instance we acknowledge that the site has not been kept as tidy as we would have liked and customers have not been kept informed as we would ordinarily expect. We have today been in contact with the contractor and those concerned to agree how this can be resolved, with immediate actions put in place to address the issues identified.

"We expect the works to be completed within the next few weeks and hope that they will improve the area for all residents as originally intended."
