Chorley Council announces when new food waste collections will start

Residents across Chorley will next week start to receive the new bins they will need for the new food waste collection service beginning in the borough this spring.

The delivery of the ‘caddies’ will continue through until early April, so some households might not receive theirs for more than a month yet.

The first food waste pick-ups will take place in the week commencing 13th April - and will then be made weekly thereafter - on the same day as the other bins are collected.

It is part of the national requirement for local authorities to start collecting leftover, unwanted and out-of-date food separately to general household rubbish.

Each Chorley household will receive a seven‑litre caddy to be kept in the kitchen and a 23-litre one for outdoors.

Two rolls of kitchen caddy liners and an information leaflet explaining how to use the service will also be provided.

Coun Adrian Lowe, executive member for customer, streetscene and environment, said, “We’re pleased to be introducing weekly food waste collections for all households in Chorley. Food waste currently goes to landfill and creates harmful gasses which are a danger to the environment.

“By recycling food waste, we can reduce the impact on the environment and instead create green energy. This change will help make Chorley cleaner, greener and more sustainable for everyone.”

Households are asked not to present their outdoor food waste caddies before 13th April, as collections will not begin until that week, even though the caddies are benign distributed in advance.
