Cyclist's horror crash set to hit TV screens

A cyclist from Bamber Bridge will appear on television tomorrow night, revealing how working off a birthday blow-out cost him eight broken ribs and most of his top teeth.

Mike Inkley went riding for some exercise after a family get-together in July 2014 to celebrate his father’s 82nd birthday.

But celebrations turned to near-tragedy when Mike was left with severe injuries after colliding with a Volkswagen Passat driven by Jabbir Ahmed in Church Street, Preston.

The photographer spent four days in intensive care. As well as injuring his ribs and mouth, he also damaged his lungs and said his shoulder “disintegrated”.

“Life-changing sometimes is too strong a word for things, but in this particular instance it has been life-changing”, said the 53-year-old.

Mike recalls what happens for ITV’s Car Crash Britain: Caught on Camera. The programme shows video from his helmet-camera, which recorded the entire incident. It includes his shout of alarm when he knows a crash is unavoidable and cries of pain at the moment of impact.

A production company made contact with him after the video made headlines in the Lancashire Evening Post in December 2014.

He said: “I was keen to take part, but I was also keen that the message wasn’t ‘them and us’, but about mutual respect - we’re all road users.”

Mike is still in recovery and has been unable to cycle since the accident - meaning the new replacement bike he bought has never been used.

Ahmed, 46, of Southern Avenue, Frenchwood, Preston, initially ­denied wrongdoing, but Mr Inkley’s helmet ­camera showed Ahmed pulling out of Church Street on the wrong side of the road and hitting the bike.

He later admitted driving without due care and attention and received nine points on his licence and a £350 fine.
