No arrests have been made at this stage, but officers are looking to speak to two men who were seen entering the property shortly before the attack.

Det Supt Nick Connaughton, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: "This incident has left a young man fighting for his life and my thoughts are very much with his family at this time.

“Our immediate priority is finding those responsible for this attack and getting them into custody.

“While I appreciate this incident will have caused the community a great deal of concern, and I would reassure the public that we have a significant number of officers working on this case and we are asking for their help in identifying those responsible."

Officers say the men who entered the address both had their hoods up and were possibly wearing tracksuit bottoms.

Detectives are treating the incident as a targeted attack and don’t believe there is a wider threat to the public.

There will be a visible police presence at the scene and reassurance patrols will be increased in the area over the coming days.
