Five Lamborghinis and Mercedes G-Wagon seized by police after M66 'racetrack' antics

Greater Manchester Police impounded a fleet of high-performance vehicles, including five Lamborghinis, following reports of dangerous driving and erratic behaviour on the M66 motorway.

A convoy of five Lamborghinis and a Mercedes G-Wagon was seized by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on Wednesday (2/9) night after officers responded to reports of dangerous driving on the M66.

The force's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) received alerts that a group of individuals were using the motorway as a 'racetrack', driving at excessive speeds, weaving across lanes, performing wheel-spins, and slowing traffic to as little as 17mph.

Officers from the newly established Transport Policing and Crime Command (TPACC) team successfully located the vehicles on the M62. They managed to stop two of the Lamborghinis as they exited the motorway.

Specialist tactics were then employed by RPU officers to bring the remaining vehicles to a halt in Rochdale.

GMP confirmed the seizures, stating: "As a result of our intervention, we seized five Lamborghinis and a Mercedes G-Wagon under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002. In addition to this, the drivers of the offending vehicles were prosecuted for a number of driving offences."

Chief Inspector Danny Kabal from GMP's Transport Policing and Crime Command issued a stern warning to motorists. "We take road safety very seriously in GMP, and we will not tolerate careless, inconsiderate, anti-social or dangerous driving on our roads," he said

Chief Inspector Kabal highlighted recent legislative changes, adding: "Recent changes to Section 59 of the Police Reform Act now enable us to seize vehicles without having to issue a warning first. As we intensify our road safety operations and enforcement campaigns, we will use this legislative change as part of our daily business."

He further cautioned: "People who think it is acceptable to use our roads as a racetrack need to pay attention to this result and take it as a warning – they will have their vehicles seized and they will be prosecuted. Where proportionate to do so, they will also be arrested."

Chief Inspector Kabal extended thanks to the public for their vigilance. "I would like to thank the members of the public who reported this matter to us and apologise to them for any inconvenience caused when we temporarily shut the road to deal with the offenders."

Anyone with footage of the incident, including dashcam or CCTV, is urged to contact GMP via 101 or their website: gmp.police.uk. The force also encourages reporting of any instances of poor driving or riding on the roads.
