Racist incident against newsagent

A man has been given a suspended jail term over a racist incident involving a shopkeeper.

Daniel Michael Hives, of Further Field, Bamber Bridge, was found guilty of using racially aggravated threatening or abusive behaviour towards newsagent Ravindrarajah Thurairajah on November 11, with intent to cause him fear violence would be used.

The 22-year-old was jailed for 13 weeks but the court agreed to suspend the term for 12 months.

The bench said the offence was committed in drink and was serious.

He was ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work and was given a restraining order banning him from A and P Newsagents on Station Road.

He must pay a £115 surcharge and £620 costs.
