Preston pensioner denies child abuse allegations

A pensioner has denied a string of charges of historical and more recent sexual abuse against young school girls.

William Altham, of Bleasdale Street East, Deepdale, Preston, is currently on trial at Preston Crown Court after proceedings started on Monday.

Some of the allegations against him date back to the late 1970s but others are as recent as the 2000s.

The 82-year-old is accused of various crimes including raping his first alleged victim, indecently assaulting her and engaging in gross indecency

He is accused of attempting to indecently assault a second girl, who was aged under 16, and indecently assaulting a third girl.

He also denies intentionally touching a 13-year-old girl.

None of the alleged victims can be identified for legal reasons. The jury, who have already heard evidence from the alleged victims, were played a recorded police interview with the defendant.

The case could conclude early next week.
