A 25-year-old man was arrested after being tackled to the floor by police in Preston at the weekend.

Officers were called to the scene in Fylde Road near the University of Lancashire’s Students’ Union building shortly before 5pm on Sunday (May 24).

The man was thrown out of the Adelphi pub and continued causing a disturbance in the street, close to The Ferret.

Four police vans rushed to the scene and the man was pinned to the ground by officers. He was restrained and made to wear a ‘spit guard’ - a mesh-like mask placed over a suspect's head to prevent them from spitting on or biting officers and the public.

Lancashire Police said Liam Byrne, 25, of Eastbourne Close, Preston, was charged with assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty and using threatening/abusive/insulting words and behaviour.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Preston Magistrates Court today.
