Murder probe: Family of man found dead in Nelson bungalow pay tribute to him

The family of a man found dead at a property in Nelson this week have been left "shocked to the core" following the launch of a murder investigation.

Michael James Brierley (48) was discovered inside a bungalow in Berkeley Close, Nelson, at 1pm on Monday.

It is believed he had been the victim of a sustained assault, and suffered multiple serious, chest, leg, arms and head injuries.

In a statement, Mr Brierley’s family said: “Although we have not been a close part of Michael’s life for some time, the news and manner of his death has left us shocked to the core.

“We remember Michael from happy childhood times as a free and easy son and brother and sincerely hope that he is now resting in peace.”

They added: “The supportive pastoral care and guidance offered by the police over the last few difficult days has been very much appreciated. We thank them sincerely and hope that their investigation is concluded speedily and with a clear resolution.

“The good wishes of so many have been a huge comfort to us. Our gratitude is enormous for the care, love and consideration shown to us by both friends and strangers.”

Three people arrested as part of the investigation remain in custody after detectives were granted further time to question them.

They are a 45-year-old man from Nelson, and a 41-year-old man from Brierfield, who are both being held on suspicion of murder.

A 31-year-old woman from Colne, initially arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender but later re-arrested on suspicion of murder, also remains in custody.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses and are particularly keen to hear from anybody who saw anyone entering or leaving 10 Berkeley Close between Sunday, November 7th, and Monday, November 8th.

They also want to hear from anybody with information on Mr Brierley’s movements in the days leading up to his death.

Chief Insp Allen Davies, from Lancashire’s Force Major Investigation Team, said: “The victim in this case, Mr Brierley, suffered some horrific injuries and we have a dedicated team of officers working tirelessly to achieve justice for him and his family. The tributes which have been paid to Mr Brierley show that he was a popular man and my thoughts very much remain with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to Mr Brierley’s death and I would appeal for anybody with information which could assist our investigation to get in contact with the police.”
