Motorway traffic was brought to a stop in Preston last night after would-be burglars made off from a raid, say police.

Police were called shortly before 11pm on Wednesday, July 18 to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the yard of a business on Pittman Way in Fulwood.

Officers say they arrived at the scene to find the vehicle abandoned and began a search of the area using dogs.

The search led officers to the northbound M6 between junctions 31 and 31a where traffic was stopped.

A police spokesman said in a post to Twitter: "Unfortunately it looks like the offenders crossed the motorway and got away prior to police arrival.

"Preston police do however have their vehicle which they left at scene so that will be off to CSI for them to work their magic."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
