James Brice, 29, of Abbott Court, Buckshaw Village, near Chorley, was arrested after the incident on May 8 last year, in which he abandoned his seriously injured 25-year-old female passenger.

The victim, from Wigan, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with spinal injuries and has been paralysed from the chest down since the crash.

Recorder David Swinnerton, sitting at Preston Crown Court, heard Brice was driving a Volvo S60 along the northbound motorway slip road at junction 28 of the M6 at Leyland.

He lost control and left the carriageway before colliding with several trees.

Brice, who suffered a broken collarbone, fled the scene and was located a short while later at his home, where he was found to be growing cannabis.

He admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and cultivating cannabis.

Sergeant Dave Hurst, of Lancashire Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Brice cowardly left the scene of an accident which had left a young woman with devastating, life-changing injuries.

“Although nothing can compensate the woman for what she’s been through, and continues to go through, I hope the conclusion of legal proceedings will give her some closure and enable her to move forward with her life.

He added: “Brice has thankfully been brought to justice and I now hope he uses his time in prison to reflect on the consequences of his actions.”
