A man who was wanted for burglary offences was chased by police in a high-speed pursuit through Garstang on Tuesday, June 16.

The pursuit - which allegedly started in Pilling - ended abruptly when the silver Ford Mondeo came to a halt in Church Street after travelling in the wrong direction.

The passenger of the vehicle was quickly arrested, but the driver made off from the scene on foot before hiding on the roof of a shed behind The Kings Arms Hotel.

A negotiator was sent to the scene to coax the man down, and he was eventually arrested at around 4.45pm.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "The occupants were wanted for burglary offences and had taken the scenic route before two stung tyres and desperate driving took over and they drove the wrong way on the one-way system.

"One detained at the scene while the other took off before trying to hide on an outbuilding roof off the High Street in Garstang.

Residents who saw the chase reported seeing a police helicopter in the area following the vehicle, and the car travelling at high speeds through the town.

One person said: "Was walking on Moss Lane. The silver Mondeo came along doing at least 60mph and literally missed my toes by two inches.

"Quite a shock. Any closer and I'd have been wiped out.

"The driver was as cool as a cucumber, sat back like he was on a Sunday cruise."
