Lancashire's judges and magistrates will have dedicated gun crime guidelines

New guidelines for sentencing offenders convicted of firearms offences will come into force on New Year’s Day following a consultation.

The Sentencing Council says for the first time, judges and magistrates will have dedicated guidelines for sentencing gun related crimes.

The guidelines will also account for converted guns.

Gun crime makes up a small percentage of all crimes committed in Lancashire, but punishing firearms offenders can be complex, and it is hoped the guidance will give clarity to judges and magistrates.

Several crimes carry maximum sentences of 10 years or life, while some require a minimum of five years.
