Lancashire's courts are open for business during new lockdown

Courts are remaining open during the new restrictions, the government has confirmed.

The guidance is in contrast to the first lockdown in March, when fewer than half of court buildings were kept open for essential in person hearings.

Guidelines state that reasonable excuses for leaving home during lockdown will include fulfilment of legal obligations, such as attending court as a lawyer or juror.

Distancing, frequent cleaning and screens have already been introduced to ensure trials could go ahead at Preston Crown Court.

Justice Minister Chris Philp tweeted: “Courts & tribunals are an essential public service. Their work continues either remotely or in person, meeting COVID-secure guidelines, incl jury trials.

“Professional users, jurors & witnesses should continue to attend. We are grateful for all you do to ensure access to justice.”
