An investigation is underway after a suspected arson attack on a flat in Heysham.

Fire crews were called out at 10.55pm on Sunday (August 23) after a fire broke out in a third-floor flat in Heysham Road.

Six fire engines from Morecambe, Lancaster, Hornby, Silverdale, Fulwood and the aerial ladder platform from Preston attended, with firefighters rescuing two casualties.

The building was evacuated with several people, including a firefighter, receiving treatment for smoke inhalation.

There was substantial damage caused in the flat with smoke damage throughout the building.

Following a joint investigation by fire crews and police, it is believed the fire was caused by accelerant found in a metal tin (pictured).

Detectives are appealing for information and urging anyone with information to come forward.

Det Con Adam Jussub, of Lancaster CID, said: "We have launched an arson investigation following a flat fire in Heysham.

"Initial enquiries between both the fire service and police suggest accelerants may have been used to start the blaze.

"This is clearly very concerning and we are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

"Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the Heysham Road area between 10pm and 10.30pm? If so please get in touch."

"There was a fire on the third floor of a four storey building. Two casualties were rescued by firefighters and conveyed to hospital by paramedics."
