Evacuation as man found dead surrounded by containers of ‘potentially hazardous material’ in Brierfield

Police attended the address on Hartington Street at around 3.20pm yesterday (Saturday, July 2) after receiving reports of a sudden death.
There they discovered the body of the man, along with the containers. His death is not believed to be suspicious.

Hide AdFirefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service were called to help with recovery efforts, and authorities remained at the scene today (July 3).
The building has been evacuated, however, police said: “There is not believed to be any wider threat to the public at this time.”
Det Insp Iain Czapowski, of Lancashire Police, said: “We attended the address and sadly found the body of a man, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
“On attendance at the address we also found a potentially hazardous material, however this is contained and is not believed to pose any danger to the wider public.

Hide Ad“A cordon is in place around the address as a precaution and the material is being removed by specialist officers.
“We appreciate that this will be concerning for the community so officers from the neighbourhood policing team will be in the area and anybody with concerns is welcome to speak to them.
“The man’s next of kin have been made aware and the coroner’s office has been notified.
“A joint investigation with the fire service is now underway to establish the exact circumstances and the findings will be passed to the coroner in due course.”
