College student caught with heroin and cocaine as he cycled through Preston

Preston Magistrates Court was told defendant Mohammed Patel, 18, was contemplating “experimenting with the drugs” but never got the chance to.

Patel, of Fishwick Parade, Preston, is studying mechanical engineering at Preston College and has no previous convictions.

Prosecuting, Martine Connah said: “In the early hours of April 12 the defendant was seen cycling around the New Hall Lane area of Preston.

“He was stopped and searched and appeared to be under the influence of cannabis.

“He was found to be in possession of four wraps of heroin and two of cocaine.”

Patel pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a class A drug.

Defending, James Ball said the defendant had spotted the items on a side table in a house.

He added: “Due to the influence of cannabis he contemplated experimenting with these drugs but never got the chance.

“Thankfully police were able to obtain these wraps before he tried them. He now understands how drugs like heroin and crack cocaine can take a grip of people after one or two times.

“I am confident we won’t see him before these courts again.”

The bench imposed an £80 fine, £30 surcharge and £85 costs.
