Blackburn man charged with fraud after residents scammed by con artist claiming he needed money for fuel to get his children home

A Blackburn man was charged following reports a con artist was knocking on doors and asking for money with a fake sob story.

Tanveer Ahmed, 50, has been charged with three counts of fraud and obtaining money by deception

It came after officers received reports last week that a man was knocking on doors and asking for money for fuel.

He would add that his children were in the car and the money would help to get them home.

“This is a scam and we are putting the message out to everybody to be mindful of anybody doing this in their area,” a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.

“If you are not expecting anybody calling at your address, then please feel free not to answer the door.

“We would like to thank the CCTV hub and the camera operators for their assistance in trawling through footage to locate the male.”

Ahmed, of Bromley House, Blackburn, will appear before Blackburn Magistrates' Court on September 1.
