£5,000 reward after Lancashire Shetland pony attack

'‹A £5,000 reward has been offered following an horrific attack on a Shetland pony which died after being slashed and stabbed.

​​Another pony which was also attack​ed​ in the Lea area of Preston survived.

Now a Lancashire businessman has come forward to offer a £5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the offender.

The attack left seven year old Shetland pony Lucas with stab wounds to his neck.

Lucas’s mother Matilda, 24, had come to his rescue during the attack and was also hurt.

The businessman, a property developer and animal lover who does not want to be named, said he was moved to offer the reward after hearing of the attack.

He said: “It is such a disgusting crime. If the reward leads to information resulting in a prosecution it is worth it to me.”

The attack took place at some point between the early hours and midday on Sunday, August 20.

Police are urging equine owners to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the county’s force.

Officers are also appealing for information following the incident.

​​Police said : “This appears to be a deliberate attack which has caused great distress, not only to the owner, but the animals themselves.

“Both ponies sustained wounds consistent with being slashed or stabbed around the neck and hind areas.”​
