New CCTV cameras to be installed to deter crime and improve public safety
Fourteen new surveillance cameras will soon be installed across Preston City centre as part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to making the streets safer.
The scheme, annouced by Preston City Council aims to strengthen surveillance in known crime hotspots and provide greater reassurance for residents, workers and visitors.
The new cameras will fill key gaps in the existing live monitoring network focusing on areas that have seen significant changes since the city’s original CCTV system was first installed.
With more residential accommodation and the relocation of night-time venues in recent years the council has reviewed routes people use to access transport giving particular attention to poorly lit areas and locations with higher levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety, Freddie Bailey, said: “These new camera are an important step in improving safety in our city centre.

“By targeting key routes and known hotspots, we can deter crime, support police investigations and make people feel more confident when they are out and about.
The cameras will focus primarily on the southern side of Fishergate and Church Street, including Mount Street, Winckley Street, Cannon Street and Bolton’s Court.
Additional coverage will be added to the northern side of the city centre, targeting Fox Street, Church Row and Jacson Street.
The council stressed that the project is part of its ongoing commitment to tackling violent crime - including violence against women and girls, while also reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the overall night-time economy.
Installation will take place in three phases over the next two years. The first phase starting later this year will cover the Mount Street, Winckley Square, Ribblesdale Place, and Cross Street areas. The remaining phases will follow next year completing the rollout across all identified hotspots.
By improving coverage in high-risk areas and supporting the work of the police the council hopes the expansion of CCTV will not only deter offenders but also increase public confidence and make Preston city centre a safer place for everyone.
