Call to improve safety on '˜dangerous' Preston road


The man, who has not been named, suffered catastrophic injuries when he was hit by a van as he crossed the busy Riversway dual carriageway.
Road users have called for more safety measures at the notorious junction as police launch an inquiry in the tragedy.

Hide AdOfficers are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened around 5.30pm on Monday near to the junction with Peddars Lane.


Readers reacted by demanding improvements to the intersection, claiming it is dangerous for pedestrians to cross.
Tracey O’Gara-McDonnell said on Facebook: “That crossing is a nightmare. There is no green man on that side of the road. Surprised there aren’t more accidents on that stretch. I went past this just as the police arrived. Saw it was a bad one. Poor family.”
Another, Amanda Loughnane added: “Terrible area to try to cross.”

Cath Wane said: “Hate crossing this road with my grandchildren. No green man. You just never know when to cross.”
And Ste Campbell commented: “RIP pal. Something needs to be done about this crossing.”
Police say the collision happened as a Peugeot Panther van was travelling on the eastbound carriageway of the dual carriageway towards Preston city centre.

Hide AdThe victim, who is believed to be from the Warton area, was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
The van driver, a 57-year-old man, was not injured.
The road had to be closed for more than four and a half hours while accident investigators carried out an examination of the scene.
Police have asked anyone with any information about the incident to contact them.
Sgt Steve Hardman, of Lancashire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “These are tragic circumstances and my thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this time.
“We are appealing for information and would urge anyone who can assist with our enquiries to come forward.
“If you witnessed the collision and have not yet spoken to police, please contact us.”
