The Active Lives and Healthy Weight service will focus on tackling obesity and encouraging people to manage their weight. It will also help them become more physically active.

In Fylde and Wyre, the scheme will be called ‘Y Active’ for active lives and ‘Y Weight’ for healthy weight and will be delivered by Fylde Coast YMCA.

Its programme will provide opportunities to take part in a range of physical activities at varied venues. The county council is providing the service in partnership with leisure trusts, district councils and other groups.

Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Lancashire County Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “Obesity is one of the biggest preventable causes of early death alongside smoking. The service is targeted at different sections of the community. Specialised support will be given to groups such as young people and families to give them the best chance of improving their health.

“The new service will encourage people to use the latest technology, such as social media, wearable fitness gadgets and smartphone apps, and offer advice from health experts.”
