The fire involved rubbish outside which had spread to two adjoining semi-detached properties.

Crews used two jets, one hose reel and four breathing apparatus.

Chris Rainford from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Drone tweeted a dramatic aerial picture of the scene.

He tweeted: "@LFRS_DRONE in attendance this afternoon at house fire in Hoghton, fire well established on arrival, so great effort to stop further spread.

"Lots of agencies involved, all putting maximum effort into helping the unfortunate owner."

Crews were still at the scene at 7.45pm tonight.
