Beauty makeover for high streets in Preston

Since 2010 the number of hairdressers, barbers and nail bars has risen from 70 to 95, an increase of 36 per cent.

Retail specialists say the trend is likely to continue as consumers seek to treat themselves to an experience rather than buy an item on the high street.

Lizzy Worden who works at Beauty and the Boutique in Penwortham, said: “We are busier than ever. Lashes are massive for us, and a lot of people want nails and tans.

“These days it’s so image-focused with social media and selfies, and people wanting treatments are getting younger.

“There’s salons springing up everywhere, but it’s not affecting us because we’re very established.”

Lucy Stainton, head of retail at the Local Data Company, said: “When money is tight people still want to treat themselves and getting your nails done is a way to do that without spending a larger amount of money on clothes. These sorts of things can’t be done online, so people looking for experiences will help the high street.”
