Baby alpaca Jude backs England ahead of World Cup semi-final

A newborn alpaca named after Jude Bellingham has become the latest England supporter at a family-run farm where the herd has already delivered its match prediction.

A newborn alpaca named after England star Jude Bellingham is being tipped as the Three Lions’ latest lucky mascot ahead of tonight’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina.

The cria (who is actually a female) — the name given to a baby alpaca — was born on Monday lunchtime at Alpaca Fold, near Samlesbury, and was quickly named Jude by owner Judith Wilkinson.

“We’re hoping Jude will bring England some luck tonight,” said Judith.

Despite being only days old, Jude has already made herself at home among the farm’s herd.

“She was up on her feet and wanting to run about really quickly. She’s got massive ears and was soon running around with the other crias in the field.”

Her arrival has taken the number of alpacas at the family-run farm to 25, with visitors already flocking to see its newest member.

Judith and her family have kept alpacas there since 2015 and run walks and meet-and-greet sessions for visitors ranging from small children to people in their 80s.

The animals also make appearances at weddings, hen parties and birthday celebrations, often dressed for the occasion in their finest bow ties.

That wardrobe has come in particularly useful during the World Cup.

Ahead of England’s showdown with Argentina, some members of the herd have been wearing England bow ties, while others were temporarily handed Argentina colours for a farmyard score prediction.

The result was decisive.

“The alpacas predicted 2-0 to England,” Judith said. “That’s what we’re hoping for.”

Although alpacas originate from South America, there is little doubt where the loyalties lie at Alpaca Fold.

“They’re fully behind England,” she added.

Jude is not the first member of the herd to be given a famous football name.

The farm is also home to an alpaca called Pelé, while another was once named after England captain Harry Kane.

“We used to have Harry Kane, but we sold him. He went on the transfer list.”

Alongside the walks, visitors to the working farm can meet, hand-feed and learn about the alpacas and their individual personalities.
