ATM fraud warning after men 'distract victims during withdrawals before taking cash' in Lancashire

Police have issued a warning after reports a group of men have been hanging around town-centre cash machines in East Lancashire before distracting people withdrawing money.

Officers say the men linger near ATMs, wait until someone begins a withdrawal, and then distract the victim at the crucial moment.

In several cases, the victim’s bank card has appeared to be retained by the machine, only for a large sum of cash to be withdrawn shortly afterwards.

Reports have been made in Nelson (Pendle Street), Accrington (Peel Street and Union Street), Burnley (St James’ Street) and Blackburn (Church Street).

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “Whilst our investigation is very much ongoing, we’d like to take this time to remind you of some important safety messaging to help you and your loved ones protect themselves.”

With Christmas approaching and more people expected to use cash machines, officers are urging the public to be especially vigilant and to help spread the warning to relatives, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable to fraud.

They are advising people to:

  • Never share their PIN with anyone.
  • Be aware of who is around when using an ATM and walk away if something feels suspicious.
  • Cover the keypad when entering a PIN.
  • Hide withdrawn cash immediately and securely.

Anyone with information, or anyone who believes they have been targeted, should report it via 101, online through Lancashire Police’s website, or to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
