Fast.com, a new website powered by Netflix servers, provides a measurement of your download speed in seconds - so you can tell if you’re getting the speed you’re paying your internet service provider for.

“We all want a faster, better internet, yet internet speeds vary greatly and can be affected by other users on your network or congestion with your Internet service provider,” Netflix said in a blog post.

The tool is ad-free and accessible from any phone, laptop or smart TV.

Research from consumer champions Which? showed last year that 15 million homes in the UK don’t get the broadband speeds they pay for - that’s a staggering 74 per cent of households.

“It’s not good enough that millions of homes are so poorly served by their broadband provider with speeds that just don’t live up to what was advertised,” said Which? executive director Richard Lloyd.

“Broadband is an essential part of life these days, so people shouldn’t be persuaded to buy a package which is never going to live up to expectations.”

That’s a view shared by no less than Prime Minister David Cameron.

Unveiling proposals for universal broadband speeds of at least 10mps across the UK last year he said: “Access to the Internet shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a right – absolutely fundamental to life in 21st century Britain.”
