Appeal launched over home closure

Bosses at OakendaleResidential Care Home in Rose Terrace, Preston, were given the shock news by the Care Quality Commission, but have decided to appeal the decision.

The CQC are unable to discuss the situation at the home due to legal reasons, but previously-published inspection reports slammed the home for failing in all five key areas of care for its elderly residents.

Concerns previously raised were over safe management of medicines, health and safety, hydration and nutrition of residents, record keeping and care planning.

Bosses claim this is out of date and while the appeal is underway, can continue operating. There are currently seven residents, all funded through Lancashire County Council.

Raja Singh, who has owned the home for 10 years, said he was perplexed at the decision of the CQC, but is confident of winning the appeal.

He said: “The CQC have made this decision based on a draft report from May. How can they do that? It’s out of date.

“We have made a lot of improvements to the home - we’ve completely redecorated, spent thousands on training, bought a lot of new equipment that used to be provided for free, have updated all of the resident’s care plans, and recruited extra staff.

“The staff have been made aware of the situation we’re in and we’ve not lost one of them - what does that tell you?

“The staff know all the residents and we’re determined to improving things for them.

“We’ve gone from being in special measures to requring improvement, so I can’t understand how this closure notice has come about.

“I just don’t feel like we’re being treated fairly, but we will win the appeal.”
