Police were alerted to the incident in Burnley by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

Lancashire Police have released a statement saying: "We were called at around 4:10pm this afternoon (Saturday, October 24th) by our colleagues at LFRS to the report of a fire in Burnley.

"The incident happened at a house on Highfield Avenue and a woman in her eighties has sadly died.

"We are working with our colleagues at LFRS in a joint investigation to establish the cause of the fire.

"The woman’s family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly sad and distressing time.

"If you have any information that could help this investigation, please call 101 quoting incident reference 929 of October 24th."
