John Topping, of 8th Penwortham St Teresa’s Scout Group, who won the 2017 Lord Derby North West regional skills competition, said: “It is not a race, but a severe test of their hiking, map reading skills and stamina as they have to arrive at a number of checkpoints within a limited time window based on their own estimated timings.

“Overnight, Scouts demonstrated their camp-craft skills including pitching their tents, cooking and doing their own washing up. In the morning, the scouts had to cook their own breakfast and then complete another 10km navigation test. It is a great way for the Scouts to learn independence and team work but in a safe and enjoyable environment.”

Participants gained an Expedition Challenge Award, which goes towards the Adventure Challenge, Outdoor Challenge, Team Leader & Teamwork Challenge badges, Hill Walker, Hikes Away and Nights Away Awards.
