They have become as iconic to Preston as, well, the Tower is to Blackpool.

And now the single row of red phone boxes that dominate Market Street in Preston city centre – some of which are Listed – really are on the map.

The Monopoly map.

They are being unveiled as ... ‘The Old Kent Road of Preston’.

The once bustling boxes - now a symbol of a bygone age - are getting to occupy the famous Old Kent Road square on the brand new official Preston Monopoly game, which hits the shops next month.

The neat row of red boxes are a heavily visited Preston landmark – but only to see, not use.

Makers Winning Moves UK - who are producing the Monopoly: Preston Edition game under official license from Monopoly owners, Hasbro - describe the phone boxes and Old Kent Road as “a very good fit”.

Both are modest, with the Old Kent Road being the most affordable property on a Monopoly board.

The phone boxes are high-profile and much talked about, just like Old Kent Road, which is arguably the most talked-about and well known Monopoly property location.

Both are heavily visited - the phone boxes near the Harris Museum and the Flag Market, and in a Monopoly game Old Kent Road is extremely visited too, as there is a Community Chest card directing players to ‘Go Back to Old Kent Road’. Marrying the two together, in the new Preston game there is a dedicated card saying: ‘Go Back to Market Street’.

This new unique version and twist on the world famous board game is being timed to hit the shops well in time for this Christmas.

The game will feature more than Preston landmarks. Mr Shrimpton said: “It’s in effect A Love Letter to Preston.”

Mark Whittle, Director of Membership Service / Preston BID Manager, said: “Preston’s iconic single-row of telephone boxes are as well-known in Preston as our much enjoyed parched peas, and butter pies.

“We’re very excited for the launch of Preston’s edition of Monopoly featuring so many of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, places and attractions.”

The new game will be available at all good toy and book stores from 9am on October 22.
