With that in mind, here are some of our very best archive pictures of Preston life back in the long-ago year of 1953 - some 71 years in the past at this point. To frame it another way - a baby born when these images were taken is now likely retired and able to claim the state pension for the past six years.
These are some incredible historic pictures, so have a look and see if you recognise any familiar sights or faces...

18. Many thanks to LP reader Ian Rigby for todayâs nostalgic Preston North End picture. He writes: âThis particular photograph was taken at Deepdale on February 21, 1953. It was Preston North End Reserves against Sheffield Wednesday Reserves. North Endâs reserve team were top of the Central League at the time but narrowly lost out in the championship race by two points to Wolverhampton Wanderersâ second string. The photo shows Eric Jones taking a penalty with North Endâs Peter Higham also in the shot. Eric had scored 11 goals from the inside-left position before the game and his good friend Pete had bagged 21 goals, including hat-tricks in both games against Manchester City and five goals in a 7-1 win against Bury Reserves. Black arm bands can be seen worn by both sides in respect of the recent death of the Sheffield Wednesday chairman.â Please send your nostalgic letters to [email protected]

19. James Hide kindly shares todayâs nostalgic picture of Preston Cricket Club 1st Eleven, photographed in 1934. James writes: ââAs a small boy of eight, I would watch my father open the bowling for Preston, which he did both before and after the Second World War. In those days, the club was considered elitist as it drew many members from the professional offices around Winckley Square, Avenham, and elsewhere. This changed in 1953 when the club left the Liverpool Competition and joined the Northern League. Playing a professional, Ken Brothwood in my day, and with some outstanding players, Preston won several competitions in the 1960/1970s.â Please send your memories and nostalgic photos to [email protected]
