Preston couple lead battle of the bulge

They wouldn't claim to be Olympic standard, just yet.

But Bill and Louise Shaw are a golden couple in a cycling revolution sweeping Britain.

The pair from Preston are the first husband and wife ambassadors for cyclewear brand Fat Lad At The Back (FLAB) which is setting up a social bike rides network called The Bulge.

The Shaws have been given the title “Flambassadors” and tasked with being neighbourhood organisers to plan outings in the local area for cyclists of all shapes, sizes and abilities.

“We’ve both lost weight since taking up cycling,” said Bill. “Our FLAB group love to cycle throughout Lancashire and the Fylde Coast as the scenery is spectacular. And we always make time for a cake or lunch stop somewhere along the route. Our FLAB rides are open to all abilities and enjoyment is key.”

Preston is one of 29 locations where FLAB groups have been launched. The aim is to encourage mass participation in cycling.

Creative director Lynn Bye said: “It’s just a nice spin out on the bike with banter and a beer at the pub afterwards.”
