Line-up revealed for Blackpool’s firework championships

Blackpool’s skies are set for another explosion of colour and sound as organisers of the resort’s fireworks championships revealed this year’s line-up.

Teams from Canada, China and France will go head-to-head in this year’s championships which is launched on Friday September 11.

A team from Canada, Firemaster Productions, put on an incredible display to scoop the prestigious prize last year, seeing off competition from finalists from Sweden and Austria.

And this year a team of their fellow countrymen, Feux D’Artifice Orion, will bid to take the title back to their homeland, pitting their pyrotechnic talents against China’s Tanghua Fireworks team and France’s Feerie team.

The free annual events are among the most popular features in Blackpool’s exciting calendar attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the Promenade.

This year’s events take place every Friday from September 11 with China kicking things off before the French team take to the stage on September 18 and the Canadians bid to retain their title on September 25.

The winner will be announced during the finale event on October 2 which features a display from the UK’s very own, Titanium Fireworks team.

Judges include Coun Gillian Campbell, Peter Sedgwick, owner of Blackpool’s piers and Cheryl Tchobanian from The Beach House, which is sponsoring and hosting the judging area again this year.

The fireworks will be fired from North Pier with build up from 7.30 and shows starting at 8.30pm.

Following the fireworks, Blackpool’s new LightPool team will provide a projection show on the front of Blackpool Tower.

All events are subject to the weather.

Coun Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The championships are a firm favourite in the Blackpool calendar.

“They are always incredibly popular and attract tens of thousands of people to the Promenade.

“It makes for a perfect way to start the weekend for those who go along and is also an incredibly skilful and serious technical competition.

“I look forward to seeing the teams in actions this year.”
